Mom's Basement Stakes

Explanation

January 2018:

The WJC are past, it's time to look at how the group in Mom's Basement did in the 2017 draft. Too many draft picks were hurt so no grades will be given. Most members of the Basement chose Vilardi, many chose Mason Shaw, so we'll just chat a little about how everyone did outside of that, but no order, or grades, or anything. Everyone did pretty good.

Botterill chose the star of the WJC, while I squinted some at all the Mittelstadt love, he did do some scoring. His time in college, not so much scoring. Botterill had 3 WJC participants, which is an early indication of a solid draft.
Casey Mittelstadt 14th
Marcus Davidsson 16th
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (G)
Oskari Laaksonen 45th
Jacob Bryson 19th among 19 year old defensemen
Linus Weissbach 47th among 19 year old forwards

I killed it. Among the 6 picks, I chose 5 defensemen and the injured Mason Shaw. The 5 defensemen ranked:
1st Liljegren
3rd Mikey Andersson
10th Josh Brook - Though Josh missed some games
18th (among 19 year olds) Pasichnuk
20th Minulin

Button gets an incomplete, as Vilardi is injured. Outside of the first pick, Button is off to a disappointing start.
Alexei Lipanov 45th
Morgan Geekie 36th among 19 year olds
Evan Barratt 43rd
Matthew Strome 35th
Cayden Primeau (G)

Pronman also chose the injured Vilardi, and is also off to a disappointing start.
Ivan Lodnia 37th
Joni Ikonen 60th
David Farrance 44th
Markus Phillips 32nd
David Kvasnicka 40/55

McKenzie ended up chosing Vilardi and two goaltenders, outside of that, his picks were impressive, as Elvenes has a great start.
Jason Robertson 17th
Michael DiPietro (G)
Ostap Safin 56
Lucas Elvenes 5th
Cayden Primeau (G)

canucksarmy chose Vilardi and Shaw, but a solid start from the rest.
Aleksi Heponiemi 10th
Grant Mismash 18th
Matthew Strome 35th
Artyom Minulin 20th

Sabrespace resident wingnut put out a full draft board which included Vilardi, but is off to a slow start.
Maxime Comtois 64th
Nikita A. Popugayev 72/88
Matthew Strome 35th
Ostap Safin 56th
Artem Minulin 20th

June 2017:

I think this is a very interesting year for Sabres' fans. If you combine my valuations of 2016 and 2017 players, 2016 would take the top 5 spots, and 2017 would take the next 5 spots (more or less), therefore, the Sabres will be able to choose a better player at 8 (again) than Nylander, despite the general belief that this is a weak draft.

The rules are straight forward, submit a draft list for 2017, we'll see how you do against me, Bob McKenzie, Jason Botterill, and whomever else shows up, taking the picks that Botterill takes, you get the highest ranked player on your board, McKenzie gets the top ranked player on his board, me, the same. In some years I remove a player from the list if, say, McKenzie takes him before you, but I don't do that anymore.

In past years, I've been surprised by how much different my board is than the general consensus, but it's doubly so this year. I think this will be an exciting year for Mom's Basement Stakes.
